Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, the Basque Government’s Minister of Science, Universities and Innovation, and Joxean Fernández, Director of the Basque Film Library, will present the film on Thursday 12 September (19:00), at Tabakalera (Donostia). Afterwards, the physicist from Navarra will be interviewed by Edurne Ormazabal, Managing Director of Tabakalera.

The Basque Film Library and the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU will be screening The secret of nature (José Antonio Pérez Ledo, 2018), a documentary about Pedro Miguel Echenique’s reflections on science and beauty. The film, which will be presented by Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, the Basque Government’s Minister of Science, Universities and Innovation, and Joxean Fernández, Director of the Basque Film Library, will be screened at Tabakalera (Donostia) on Thursday 12 September (19:00). Afterwards, the physicist from Navarra will be interviewed by Edurne Ormazabal, Director General of Tabakalera.

The film, co-produced by the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU and K2000, explores the life and work of Etxenike, who shares his reflections on science and beauty. The physicist bases this thinking on two beauty-related questions: “Is beauty the criterion of truth? What is beauty in science?”.

Among many other awards for his research work, Pedro Miguel Etxenike received the Euskadi Research Award in 1996, the Max Planck Physics Prize in 1998 and that same year the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research for his discoveries concerning the theoretical prediction of electronic image states on the surface of solids. He has made important contributions in the field of ion-matter interactions and electron energy loss in electron and tunnelling microscopy. He is currently a Professor Emeritus of the UPV/EHU and President of the DIPC. Every year, he opens the Film and Science season organised by the Basque Film Library, the DIPC and the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Tickets for this screening, organised in conjunction with the DIPC and the San Sebastian Film Festival – institutions that are bywords for Film and Science – are on sale on the Tabakalera website and at the building’s information desk.
